BISTRO MONCUR The Woollahra hotel is an art deco building completed in 1937 for Tooths Brewery. During this period hotels offered accommodation, a public bar, ladies lounge and a cocktail bar but food was restricted to ‘counter lunch’ which was served on the bar. There were no tables since the tradition was to stand and drink large quantities of beer. In the 1960’s, an adjacent property was purchased to provide a beer garden. Within 10 years, a BBQ restaurant where guests could cook their own steaks replaced this open-air space. Ron White and Damien Pignolet purchased the hotel in 1992. Following extensive renovations, the partners created a Parisienne style restaurant they named Bistro Moncur. It was an instant success and has maintained full houses ever since. Architects Tzannes Associates recently rebuilt the hotel giving Bistro Moncur an exciting new image while maintaining the soul of this Woollahra ‘institution’. Executive chef, Damien Pignolet and his team continue to interpret their modern award winning French cuisine supported by an equally awarded wine list.
